When a welfare check can help

Book a safety check visit when you are worried but there is no clear sign of an emergency:

  • an elderly parent has not answered the phone all day and you live too far away to call round
  • a son or daughter at university in London has gone quiet
  • a tenant has not been seen, post is building up and neighbours have raised concerns
  • a lone worker has missed a check-in at a site, a client visit or a late shift

Welfare check or 999?

A welfare check is not an emergency response. Sparta Guard is not the police or an emergency service.

Situation What to do
You believe someone is at immediate risk, injured, or has said they may harm themselves Call 999 now
Someone is not answering and you are worried, but there is no sign of immediate danger Book a Sparta Guard welfare check
You have ongoing concerns about an adult’s care or safety at home Contact their GP or the local council’s adult social care team
Someone needs medical advice but it is not an emergency Call NHS 111

If you are unsure, call 999. For a building that needs urgent cover rather than a person, see emergency security guards.

What happens during a visit

  1. The responder arrives and explains at the door that someone who cares about the person asked them to call.
  2. If the person answers, the responder checks they are all right, asks if they would like to contact you, and passes on your message.
  3. If there is no answer, the responder looks for signs of concern, such as lights, sounds, post or an open door, and may speak to a neighbour or concierge.
  4. You get an update on WhatsApp as soon as the visit is finished, with what the responder saw and heard.

Responders do not force entry. If there is reason to believe someone inside needs urgent help, they call 999, because the police and ambulance service can act where a private responder cannot.

Respect, consent and privacy

The person being checked is an adult with their own rights. Our responders:

  • are polite and discreet on the doorstep and in shared buildings
  • respect a person’s choice not to talk, and tell you only that they appeared safe
  • do not go inside unless invited, and leave when asked
  • share only what you need to know about the visit

How to book a welfare check

Message us on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or the Sparta Guard app, as explained in how on-demand security works. To help the responder, include:

  • the person’s name, full address, flat number and any door entry codes
  • your relationship to them and a message you would like passed on
  • a recent description or photo, so the responder speaks to the right person
  • anything relevant, such as mobility needs, a medical condition, hearing loss or a language other than English
  • a trusted neighbour, concierge or keyholder nearby

Who books welfare checks

A son in Edinburgh

His mother in Marylebone has not answered for a day. A responder finds her well, with a flat phone battery, and she calls him back from the doorstep.

A letting agent in Camden

A tenant has not been seen for two weeks. A responder speaks to the tenant and confirms they are well.

A cleaning company in the City

An evening cleaner misses the 10pm check-in. A responder goes to the building and confirms she is safe.

For checks on an empty home rather than a person, book property security checks.

What a welfare check costs

The price depends on the time of day, how quickly you need the visit and how long the responder stays. Families and employers who want regular visits can ask about membership plans. Read more about Sparta Guard as a London security company.

Frequently asked questions

What is a welfare check?

A welfare check is a visit to make sure someone is safe when you cannot reach them. With Sparta Guard, a DBS-checked, SIA-licensed responder goes to the address, speaks to the person if they answer, and messages you with what they found. It is for worrying situations, not emergencies, which always need 999.

Can the police do a welfare check instead?

Police may attend where there is a genuine concern for someone’s life or safety, and you should call 999 if you believe someone is at immediate risk. Where there is no sign of immediate danger, a private welfare check lets you get an answer quickly without using emergency services.

Will the responder go inside the property?

Only if the person invites them in. Responders do not force entry or use keys without permission. If they see or hear signs that someone inside needs urgent help, they call 999 and stay until help arrives, so the police or paramedics can act.

What if the person does not want a visit?

That is their right. The responder explains who asked them to call, respects the person’s wishes and leaves when asked, without pressing for details. You still hear that the person was seen and appeared safe, which is often the reassurance families and employers need most.

Can I book regular welfare visits?

Yes. You can book visits on set days, such as every Tuesday and Friday, for a relative living alone, a lone worker or a tenant you are worried about. There is no contract, and you can change or stop the visits at any time.
